European Universities Futsal Championship wants to leave a Sustainability Legacy

The EUC Futsal’19 Organizing Committee developed a strategy focused on sustainable development and the promotion of social responsibility among participants and delegations involved.

The European Universities Futsal Championship Braga 2019 will be marked by the accomplishment of several initiatives meeting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 2030.

The Organizing Committee has developed an action plan, under the theme Playing for the Planet!, with the ambition of minimize environmental impact promoting resources efficiency and circular economy, tackling climate change and stimulating social responsibility and the well-being of all athletes and technical teams.

"We believe this is an innovative and disruptive project with a rippling effect for future events. Brought to life inside of an academic community, we believe that this type of initiative assumes an even greater responsibility. Each of us has to do its part in the protection and preservation of the whole Planet," noted Diogo Arezes, member of the Organizing Committee and responsible for drafting the plan.

This plan will be carried out by effective initiatives such as: making sure every venue has ecopoints and smart management systems for energy and water; Dematerialising administrative processes; Eliminating consumption of disposable plastic - namely water bottles; Meals’ confection with reduced carbon footprint; Promoting stakeholders’ engagement and monitoring greenhouse gas emissions.

Carlos Videira, Social Services Department of Sports and Culture’s Director, highlights the growing concern of the University of Minho with the sustainability agenda regarding the organization of major sporting events: "Our commitment is to plant the number of equivalent trees to the emissions produced during the Final Phases of the National University Championships and during the European Universities Futsal Championship. We intend to do this in the last quarter of the year, with the main goal of achieving a zero carbon footprint".

The Championship runs from July 15 to 23, with the participation of 28 teams from 15 European countries. It will take place in the University of Minho’s Sports Complex, Altice Forum Braga and Lamaçães Sports Hall.
